20 Weeks: The Importance of Maternal Well-Being Coaching

Twenty. Twenty weeks – the duration it took for me to regain a sense of "normalcy" after childbirth. Yet, even this newfound "normal" didn't quite feel right. Pregnancy is an incredible journey that transforms not just the body but the entire essence of one's being. It weaves memories and emotions into a complex tapestry, leaving us with a shell of something that once was.

While a woman will see a medical professional about 15 times during a healthy pregnancy, the postpartum period often gets a single wellness check within 4-6 weeks after giving birth. The statistics reveal alarming disparities, especially for Black and Latina women. They face higher risks of severe complications and death, both during and after childbirth. Shockingly, 36% of maternal deaths happen during or immediately after delivery, and the risk persists, with 33% occurring one week to one year after delivery. More disturbing is that most of these deaths are preventable.*

However, the challenges don't end there. Postpartum complications such as heart disease, stroke, and infections are potential threats. Coupled with the emotional stress of childbirth, postpartum depression becomes a reality for many. According to the American Psychological Association, 1 in 7 women experiences postpartum depression. Women of color face double the risk, with rates soaring close to 38% compared to the 13–19% rate for all new mothers.

A well-structured support system during and after pregnancy can make a significant difference in maternal outcomes. As a coach, I understand the importance of focusing on wellbeing during this transformative period. I've been there, now let me help you!

Imagine a world where the process of motherhood is not just beautiful but also prioritizes wellbeing. Focusing on my own wellbeing after giving birth brought about a new normal – a renewed commitment to taking my physical and mental health seriously.
